Votives and other near obsolete things, 2019
Sculpture / Installation
2019
In Votives and other near obsolete things, I drew on the tradition of wax votives in Catholic faith, which are offerings given by devotees as part of the fulfilment of their prayers - for example, body parts may be given in hope of healing an illness, or a figure of a baby from someone desiring to fall pregnant. Installed in the mould making room at the former Sydney College of the Arts campus in Rozelle, alongside readymade objects that signal contemporary tools of production, my work explores the place of religion in the context of capitalist forces. I ask, what votives can we offer in these times to consecrate the bodies that labour?
